Exam & Observation

Your free orthodontic consultation

No referral needed. Every first visit at McGrady Orthodontics is a relaxed, no-pressure consultation with Dr. McGrady to map out what's possible for your smile.

What to expect

A friendly, thorough first visit

Your first visit starts with a full exam, checking how your bite fits together, how your jaw and teeth are developing, and whether anything would benefit from treatment now or later.

We use iTero™ digital scanning to take quick, comfortable 3D images of your teeth (no goopy impressions). If treatment makes sense, you'll leave with a clear plan, a transparent cost estimate, and honest answers to every question.

What we look for

Common Orthodontic Problems

Part of every exam is checking for the issues below. Some are cosmetic, others affect how you bite, chew, and keep your teeth clean — and most are easiest to correct when they're caught early.

Common orthodontic problems: crowding, excessive spacing, crossbite, open bite, overbite (deep bite), underbite, overjet (protrusion), and abnormal eruption.
Who it's for

Everyone, at any age

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child have a first orthodontic check by age 7. Most kids that age don't need treatment, but early evaluation lets Dr. McGrady spot growth issues when they're easiest to guide.

Teens and adults are welcome any time, whether you're starting braces or aligners, finishing post-treatment retention, or finally fixing something that has bothered you for years.

First-Visit FAQ

Common questions about your first visit

How much does an orthodontic exam cost?

Your first orthodontic exam at McGrady Orthodontics is always free. That includes Dr. McGrady's evaluation, any necessary 3D imaging with our iTero™ scanner, and a personalized treatment plan if one is needed.

Do I need a referral from my dentist?

No referral is required. You can book a free orthodontic consultation directly. Many of our patients come to us without a referral from their general dentist.

At what age should my child have their first orthodontic exam?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child have a first orthodontic check by age 7. Most kids that age don't need treatment yet, but early evaluation lets Dr. McGrady spot growth issues when they're easiest to guide.

What should I bring to the first visit?

Just bring your insurance card if you'd like us to verify your benefits. If your dentist has recent panoramic or bitewing X-rays, those can be useful, but they're not required: we have everything we need on-site.

Does the exam mean I'm committing to treatment?

Not at all. The first visit is a no-pressure consultation. Dr. McGrady will explain what he sees, what your options are, and what they would cost, and then you decide what makes sense for you and your family.
