Keeping your new smile, for life
The day your braces come off (or your last aligner finishes) is the start of the retention phase, the most important part of long-term success.
Teeth never really stop moving
The bone and ligaments around your teeth need time to settle into their new position after active treatment. Without retainers, teeth gradually drift, and the longer you go without retention, the more they shift. A custom retainer locks in your result.
Dr. McGrady designs retention plans around your specific case. Some patients do best with removable retainers, others with a discreet bonded retainer behind the front teeth, and many use both. We walk you through care, wear schedule, and check-ins.
Don't wait, call us
A retainer that's lost, cracked, or no longer fits is the fastest way for teeth to start shifting back. If yours is missing or damaged, call the office and we'll get you in for a replacement before any movement happens.
Common questions about retainers
How long do I need to wear my retainer?
Plan to wear retainers for life. For the first several months after treatment, that means full-time wear (except when eating or brushing). After that, you'll transition to nighttime-only wear, which most patients continue indefinitely to keep their result stable.
Should I get a removable or bonded retainer?
Both work well, and many patients use a combination. Removable retainers are easy to clean and replace; bonded retainers (a thin wire behind the front teeth) require no daily action. Dr. McGrady will recommend the right option based on your case.
What if I lose or break my retainer?
Call the office right away. Even a few weeks without retention can let teeth start shifting back. We'll get you in quickly for a replacement and, if needed, a quick check on tooth position.
How do I clean my retainer?
Rinse after each wear and gently brush with a soft toothbrush and clear soap. Avoid hot water (it warps the plastic) and toothpaste (it scratches the surface and dulls clarity). Soak weekly in a retainer cleaning solution for a deeper clean.
Can I drink with my retainer in?
Cold water is fine. Avoid hot drinks (the heat can warp removable retainers) and sugary or staining drinks like coffee, tea, juice, or soda (sugar trapped against your teeth can lead to decay).
